Honoring Berthoud’s Legacy: The Caretakers of Tradition
The Caretakers of Tradition is a nonprofit, whose members are past firefighters with the Berthoud Fire Protection District. Their mission is to preserve the history of the community volunteer fire and rescue services and to exhibit these historical items for educational purposes.
Berthoud’s charm isn’t just found in its scenic landscapes and welcoming community, it’s also embedded in its deep respect for history. The Caretakers of Tradition, a dedicated group of historians, preservationists, and community members, work tirelessly to ensure that Berthoud’s past remains alive and accessible. Through events, exhibitions, and the restoration of key historical sites, they bring history to life and highlight the importance of preserving the town’s heritage.

One of their most notable projects is the Berthoud Hose Company Showroom, a newly opened space dedicated to celebrating the town’s rich firefighting legacy. Located adjacent to the Fire Station in downtown Berthoud, the showroom showcases a collection of historical firefighting equipment, photographs, and memorabilia. Visitors can step back in time and experience the evolution of firefighting in Berthoud, gaining a deeper appreciation for the courage and service of the town’s earliest firefighters.
The Berthoud Hose Company, originally formed in the early 1900s, played a crucial role in protecting the community before modern firefighting techniques and equipment were available. The showroom pays homage to these pioneers, featuring exhibits that highlight their struggles, triumphs, and dedication. Families, students, and history enthusiasts alike will find themselves captivated by the displays and the stories behind them.

Beyond the showroom, the Caretakers of Tradition continue their work through a variety of initiatives, including historic walking tours, archival preservation efforts, and community storytelling events. Their commitment to keeping history alive ensures that Berthoud’s rich traditions will not be forgotten but will instead inspire and educate future generations.
For those who cherish history and want to support its preservation, the Berthoud Hose Company Showroom and the Caretakers of Tradition offer an open invitation to explore, learn, and celebrate the past. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or new to the community, this is a place where the legacy of Berthoud lives on, waiting to be discovered.
